A story about LaKari

LaKari was inspired by a goal of placing anonymous notes, written on post-it note paper, in random places for strangers to find. It is kind of an Amelie, playful, trickster kind of thing to do. It’s kind of adventurous and interesting. I wrote an entry that LaKari read about starting a website that displayed photos of the notes and short entries about the notes, and she started one up! It was really good to feel that I had helped inspire someone to do something fun and cool. So, I’d like to meet LaKari someday. I’m glad that we were able to meet through email, at least.

Why I want to meet Mrs. Wonderful

Ms. B is very kind with her words, and I have received several cheers from her on my goals here on 43Things. She has a great profile photo, with an infectious smile. I appreciate her supporting words in her blog entries, and I read what other people have written about her, as well. She seems to be well-liked. It’s usually not bad to communicate with people, and I’m all for meeting new people.

Why I want to meet Sexuality in Art

I really enjoy this person’s blog entries and comments on Wordpress, Flickr, 43Things, and Amazon. I’ve read quite a bit from this person today, and I’ve enjoyed the experience. If you’re interested in gender, sexuality, art, feminism, relationships, or living, at all, then you would probably come away with something good after reading some of her work.

Why I want to meet Banksy

I’ve been a fan of street art, particularly graffiti and tagging, for a long time now. Banksy is a famous name in street art. He’s one of the street artists who have entered into the digital age, with a web site and all.

A story about Michel Foucault

I read Discipline and Punish about 8 or 9 years ago, after hearing about Michel Foucault in a class I took in university. The class was called “Orwell and Orwellianisms…”, and it, of course, focused on the writings and ideas of George Orwell, one of my heroes.

Where Foucault and Orwell cross is in their examinations of the social concepts of punishment, surveillance, discipline, and crime. Foucault believed that the spectacle of punishment, the fear of being tortured and ripped apart, was not an adequate way to instill discipline in a people and to maintain social control. That’s exactly what Orwell’s 1984 argued, as well. It is only when people internalize an idea that they actually modify their own behavior. The torture must be internalized in order for criminal behavior to be modified, but even then, the motivation can’t be from just fear alone.

Somewhere down the line, Foucault continues, people were place in charge of the decision to keep or free an inmate. Psychologists, Wardens, Parole Officers, Judges, Correctional Officers, Parole Boards, Probation Officers, and other professionals were put in charge of the punished. They make a decision as to whether or not it is in their professional opinion that a criminal has been disciplined and punished enough.

And so, we have 10 to 15, 25 to life, possibility of parole, gun specs, no possibility of parole, good time, bad time, educational credits, and the concept of “rehabilitation”.

Why I want to meet cherise

What am I looking for, on the internet?

I’m searching for myself, I think.

‘Ramshackle’ – Beck

I’m looking around for ideas, inspiration, memories, dreams, goals, action… I’m looking for stories. I’m looking for business ideas. I’m looking for song titles. I’m looking for topics to write about. I’m looking for interesting people to write about. I’m looking for interesting places to write about (enough with the hyperlinks, already!!). I’m looking for interesting events and products. The internet is an etherdreamworld for the inspired writer.

I don’t know this girl. Who really knows anybody?

This is how she appears to me…

A very prolific blogger. An internet-omnipresent writer. A ‘zine enthusiast, perhaps to the level of creating one herself or helping others create one (or many?). I like to write too, and one of my dreams is to make a living as a writer, so I think I could live vicariously through this one.

‘Bruce Weezersteen’ – docrivs

Writers are intersting. Period. I was reading the writings of a sex writer earlier. I have no idea how I found her site, as web surfing goes. I know I linked to her from a blog. The blog was on a site put together by a girl who claims to be a feminist and writes about female masturbation and such. She’s a good writer too.

But, back to endofauniverse, aka cherise…

An indie rock fan, amongst other alternative rock styles. She seems to have a taste in music that I can handle. I like a wide variety of music, and I think there is music for any mood and moods for any music. I had to listen to music after listening to the music on her MySpace page.

She had (still has?) a bike that she named “Jazzy”. (I had a cat named “Jasmine”, and I used to call her “Jazzy”, too.) There is something unique about a person who names an inanimate object, like a bike. People name boats. People name homes. People name cars. So, why not a bike? However, I recall something Joseph Campbell said about naming things. It was something like, ‘When you name something you make it a “thou”.’ I think he meant that you give it a soul.

‘3-Minute-Rule’ – Beasties

She adheres to a vegetarian, possibly vegan, diet, and I think that is how I found her on 43Things. (I have been sticking to a vegetarian and sometimes vegan diet for a couple of years now, but, recently, I have decided that I want to be flexible about meat, and I’ve eaten chicken, fish, and even… da-da-duh… sausage :O, which gave me the runs and wasn’t very good, anyway.)

I decided I didn’t want to be “a vegetarian”. I don’t like the label. i don’t like the stigma. I don’t like the stereotype. I can handle it when people know that “I don’t eat meat”, but to be “a vegetarian” is to take on so much baggage—“hippie”, “treehugger”, “animal rights activist”, “environmental activist”, “liberal”... I just want to be me. And I sometimes eat meat. (rarely, but sometimes)

Why did I stop eating meat, in the first place? I thought it would make me healthier. I thought it would make me leaner. I thought it would give me enlightenment. That was only partly true, as most things are.

Back to cherise…

‘Peace Frog’ – The Doors

She has lots of livejournal and myspace friends, and must be using the internet on a constant basis. (that sounds familiar : )

‘Novacane’ – Beck

She also seems very literate and smart. She has made all kinds of posts about reading books that appear to be rather complex, deep, and serious, more for the scholar than the normal entertainment reader (I mean the books, not the posts, but she has posted some very smart posts).

She wants to meet Noam Chomsky, and I would too. She wants to meet Angelina Jolie (crazy woman!!!), and I would too. She wants to meet either Amelie (the character) or Audrey (the actor who played her), and I definitely would too.

? – Radiohead

She has at least one tattoo, and it is a star. I have two, and I love them. They rock. I like stars too.

She seems like a very busy girl. I can’t focus on one thing at a time.

She writes poetry. I eat poetry. (that doesn’t make sense)

‘Tick Tock’ – Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs

That is why I looked at her profile. That is why it would be cool if she said hello.

Why I want to meet Noam Chomsky

If you’ve never seen any of his movies about corporate control of the media, and you’ve never heard his speeches or watched interviews of him, then you may be interested to know this. Noam Chomsky is very outspoken about our beloved media system and how journalistic ethics are overpowered by the doctrines of greed.

Why I admire Ani DiFranco

She seems to say what she wants to say, but she reveals her weaknesses too. She doesn’t just sing about defying everything and rebelling against the forces of evil. She speaks about how she sometimes gives in, how she lies sometimes, how she hurts people sometimes, and how she has been hurt. Her voice can get annoying sometimes, but it can also be very soothing and calming and warm. Her guitar playing is the same way. Sometimes it is obnoxious. Sometimes it mellows the sould. Ani is also one of my indie heroes, because she put out her own record label and supports local business. Ani Rocks!!

A story about Donnie Darko

Jake really made Donnie into a believable character in this film, and donnie darko has become one of my favorite flicks. The bunny character was very creepy. The woman who wrote the book on the physics behind time travel was really interesting. Donnie’s love interest was a good supporting character. I loved the way the images of the plane engine falling through the roof of the house turned out. Great movie! I think it would be cool to hear some stories about the movie from the star.

How I met Jewel

I once worked as a Runner for Polaris Amphitheatre (now called Germaine Amphitheatre). My job involved transporting people to and from the amphitheatre, among many other tasks.

During the Neil Young show in the summer of 1997, one of my jobs was to pick up Jewel, her mother, and her manager from the Sheraton and take her to the amphitheatre as quickly and smoothly as possible. I knew the best routes to and from to avoid traffic, and I was using my own personal vehicle, a 1994 Chrysler-Dodge Caravan, so I felt comfortable driving.

Anyway, I’ve already told my story about how I met Jewel in my blog and on 43 Things. So, you’re welcome to read the story in either source.
